If you visited our tasting rooms in the early 90's, you may have been told by one of our esteemed former tasting room employees that "Gewürztraminer" was the German phrase for "Giant Hamster." We miss having David Greenbergs wit in the tasting room. "Gewürz" actually means "spicy" in German. "Traminer" is derived from the town in which this grape was originally grown.
Winemaking for Gewürztraminer is straight forward. Cold settled juice is fermented cool to retain aroma and flavor. We centifuge to arrest fermentation at roughly 1.5 % residual sugar. The wine is then bottled.
This wine does in fact have a unique spicy and floral character which makes it a wonderful wine to enjoy with Asian or other exotic fare. The flavor is also described as lychee and has a soft easy finish.
